I was the only one that could support my family of 5. I would do the laundry, cooking, and make my body available to men working on the farms to earn money to feed my family. Sometimes the men would drink and abuse us and not pay. Then we had the opportunity to learn beadwork from a woman on one of the farms. We all learn traditional beadwork at school, but this was different. After two weeks of training, we could manufacture earrings and necklaces to sell. We have a saying in Africa that says, 'little makes a lot.' Earring by earring our lives changed. We felt proud, empowered, and strong. We could buy food, medicine and sometimes even fruit.
